With the construction phase of the British Memorial Garden nearing completion, landscaping of the City park began in spring 2007. Thousands of daffodils planted last autumn have brought spring color to the garden. Planting will continue throughout the spring and summer. The park is open to the public and is enjoyed daily by scores of area residents and workers.
A celebration of Britain’s relationship with
the United States, the British Memorial Garden at Hanover Square,
New York is symbolic of the historic bond between the two countries.
This new park for New York City will play a vital role in the revitalisation
of Lower Manhattan.
The garden is being built in one of Manhattan’s
most historic squares, three blocks south of the World Trade Centre
site – Ground Zero. It will be a place of reflection and recreation
and a focal point of remembrance for the British community; not
only for 67 Britons lost on September 11th 2001, but also for the
British service men and women who gave their lives alongside Americans
in two World Wars and subsequent conflicts.
This international initiative was set up by the
US charity British Memorial Garden Trust New York, Inc under the Royal Patronage of HRH
The Prince of Wales. The British-based charity British Memorial
Garden Trust UK Ltd will support the work carried out in New York
and raise funds on this side of the Atlantic.
The
British Memorial Garden at Hanover Square will incorporate many
wonderful elements of historic gardens of the United Kingdom. The
garden design is by Isabel and Julian Bannerman, landscape architects
to His Royal Highness. A sculpture to the unity between the United
Kingdom and the United States will be created by Turner Prize winner
Anish Kapoor for the garden, and work by the sculptor Simon Verity
will feature within it.
